Can You Power Wash Composite Wood Decking?

If you’ve just built your deck, keeping it looking great may be your top priority. This is because decks are outdoors and exposed to weather and other factors. Even low-maintenance materials like composite decking need to be cleaned every once in a while. So, can I power wash my composite deck tiles?

This is one of the first questions many homeowners with decks ask. It makes sense to ask this question because more and more people are now using power washing to clean things like sidewalks, pavers, and yard paths. Here are some tips on how to do it safely, as well as ways to keep your deck clean.

Possible Problems with Power Washing Composite Wood Decking

Power-washing composite wood decking is not a good idea for several reasons. The main reason is that the pressure washer can harm the surface of composite decking. Damage caused to the decking surface can lead to many other problems that can increase maintenance needs and costs. There is also a possibility that severe damage may shorten the life of composite wood decking.

Therefore, if you are using power washing for composite decking, there are some things you need to keep in mind. Otherwise, using power washing poses some risks. In the long run, you may need to spend more money to repair and replace the decking. These problems include:

  • Damage to the Deck Surface. If the pressure is set too high or the nozzle is too close to the deck surface, “etching” may occur. This can leave marks on the composite decking surface that cannot be removed.
  • Damage to the Core. In most cases, the finish of the composite decking material will keep the core dry. If the finish is damaged or worn, water can be trapped and mold can grow. The mold will then gradually spread to the rest of the damaged deck. Mold is difficult to remove once it begins to grow, which means the deck or some of its components may need to be replaced as soon as possible.
  • Increased Maintenance Costs. If the deck is damaged, you will have to spend more time and money to repair it. Additionally, if the replacement deck boards are not of the same color, it can diminish the appearance of the entire deck.

How Do I Power Wash My Composite Decking?

Composite wood decking offers numerous benefits, including strength and durability, stain resistance, and ease of cleaning. It allows you to have more time to enjoy the outdoors than to maintain and care for it. Nonetheless, because power washing decking cleans fast and well, many people choose this method of cleaning. If you decide to use a pressure washer, be sure to follow these safety rules:

Keep Your Distance

When using power washing composite wood decking, use a wider fan nozzle. Also, make sure the nozzle is more than 9 inches away from the surface of the decking. This should be enough to clean the composite decking without damaging it.

Pressure Settings

Do not use more than 1500psi when using the power washer. If the pressure is too high, the surface of the composite decking may be damaged. Some composite wood decking can be used with pressures higher than 1500 psi, but consult the manufacturer of that composite decking before using it.

Using a Soft Brush

Before using the power washer, spray the deck surface evenly with soapy water. Then gently scrub all composite decking boards with a soft bristle brush. Finally, use the power washer to thoroughly clean the entire deck.

Cleaning with the Grain

Cleaning the deck must be done piece by piece, following the grain of the deck surface. This reduces the likelihood of damage to the composite wood decking. It also cleans the surface of the composite decking better.

Therefore, if you are going to use a power washer, make sure you take note of the above precautions. Do not do anything that will damage the composite wood decking.

If you are not sure how effective power washing is for composite decking. Then you can test a small portion of the decking that is hidden from view before proceeding with the overall cleaning. But even during the testing process, make sure that you follow the steps mentioned above because damaging the finish of the decking can lead to more problems.

Other Ways to Clean Composite Decking

If you don’t want to use a power washer to clean composite wood decking, you can try other ways to clean your deck. These methods of cleaning your deck may take longer, but they are also safer. Follow these steps to clean composite decking.

  1. Remove all deck furniture, decorations, and other items. This will allow you to fully clean your composite decking without getting your furniture and other items wet.
  2. Use a broom to remove dirt and other things like leaves and food scraps from your deck. Even the tiniest of deck crevices need to be cleaned. You can also use a vacuum cleaner to clean the deck surface.
  3. Prepare soap and warm water. Rinse the entire composite decking with water, then wash the deck surface with water containing soap. This will help to remove any dirt and debris that is still present. Alternatively, you can use vinegar or baking soda instead of soapy water. However, do not use chlorine bleach or other chemicals that may harm the environment.
  4. Gently scrub the deck with a soft-bristle brush to remove all dirt. Be sure to clean the deck boards with the grain. If you have a large outdoor deck, you can divide it into different sections. Do not allow dirty water to remain on the deck and form a film on its surface.
  5. Clean composite decking thoroughly with plenty of water. Then wait until the deck surface is dry before putting back furniture and decorations. Alternatively, you can clean the furniture and upholstery while you wait.

Things to Avoid when Cleaning Composite Decking

Unlike wood decking, composite wood decking doesn’t require frequent care and maintenance. However, this doesn’t mean that you don’t need to clean the decking from dirt and grease. On the other hand, only simple cleaning is needed to keep composite decking looking good. Therefore, you only need to clean composite decking twice a year on a regular basis.

Here are some of the things that you should avoid when cleaning composite decking. This will allow you to clean the decking better without harming the surface of the decking.

Avoid Using the Wrong Cleaner

Using the wrong cleaner on composite decking can damage the deck. Check the label of any cleaner you purchase and never use a “deck cleaner” that contains chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach is highly corrosive and can damage the surface of your deck.

Eventually, it will change the color of the composite decking surface and make mold and mildew problems worse. In addition, these chlorine-based cleaners damage the environment. Therefore, stay away from chlorine bleach and opt for sodium carbonate cleaners.

Not Cleaning the Crevices in the Decking

Although composite decking has excellent water and mold resistance properties, it will not provide the necessary conditions for mold growth. But if you don’t clean the seams of the decking well while cleaning composite decking. Then, over time, dirt and debris will build up.

This organic waste left at the seams will then mold and rot, which will lead to the growth of mold. Therefore, when you clean composite decking, you should thoroughly clean the seams between the deck boards. This will help in air circulation between the decking boards and keep the underside of the decking dry.

Not Choosing the Right Tools

You need to be more careful when cleaning composite decking. A broom or garden hose can be used to clean up dirt and other things. Always use a soft-bristle brush for deeper cleaning. Choose a plastic shovel rather than a metal one for snow removal. This is because hard tools can damage the composite decking surface and leave you with a damaged deck appearance.

High Quality Composite Decking

Summary

Composite wood decking not only makes your home more valuable, but it also looks better. It is important to know how to keep your composite decking in good condition. Using a power washer to clean composite decking is an effective way to remove dirt, debris, and mold. However, it must be done carefully to avoid damaging the decking.

Use a pressure washer with a wide fan nozzle and keep the nozzle at least 9 inches away from the surface. This will prevent the planning or splitting of the deck boards. Also, using a lower pressure setting and a mild cleaner specifically formulated for composite decking will help to safely clean the surface. After power washing, rinse the decking thoroughly to remove any residual detergent. Finally, allow it to dry completely before moving back to the deck furniture and other decorative items.

By following these guidelines and taking care to use proper techniques, homeowners can safely keep their composite wood decking clean and looking great for years to come.
