Can You Put a Grill on a Composite Deck?

When the weekend rolls around, you invite your friends to a potluck dinner on your outdoor deck. Family and friends gather on the deck, and the smell of charcoal fills the air. They can’t wait to sample the sizzling homemade burgers and corn. A lively backyard barbecue can bring people together. Maybe your deck is the perfect place for an outdoor gathering, but it’s not always the safest place to smoke summer foods like sausages and shrimp skewers.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, deck barbecues have sparked an average of 10,200 house fires per year over the years. However, you can prevent your cookout from catching fire by following safety rules and having the right tools. In this article, we will discuss in detail how to safely use the grill on the cheapest composite decking.

With this help, you can grill on your outdoor deck without getting hurt.

How to Keep Yourself and Your Deck Safe

Whether you’re using gas or charcoal, you’ll want to do everything you can to make sure your cookout goes smoothly. While cooking is usually safe, it’s important to pay extra attention to the grill and the area around it, especially wooden decks, as wood can easily catch fire and get dirty.

If you are using composite decking, then you may not have to worry about it catching fire. This is because composite decking has good fire resistance. Of course, you still need to take precautions for barbecuing because falling coals could potentially damage your composite decking boards.

Pay Attention to the Wind Direction

You may think that a breezy afternoon is the best time to have a picnic with the bar on your composite decking. Because sparks can fly when it’s windy, keep your grill at least 5 feet away from any walls or railings and check the direction of the wind before opening the lid.

If your deck is shaded by trees, be extra careful when grilling on windy nights. The grill should be placed in an open area with no bushes, vines, or trees in the way. No matter how well you’ve taken care of your lawn, you should still keep a fire extinguisher handy in case leaves fall on an open fire.

Look for Spills

If you’re having a party on your deck in the summer, keep an eye out for food and grease dripping down. Grease and food particles can be difficult to remove from wooden decks, although they don’t pose an immediate threat to you or your guests. Blemishes can usually be covered up with fresh paint or varnish.

If people in your home frequently spill (baked) beans, you may want to lay composite decking. Composite decking doesn’t require much care and doesn’t stain as easily. When food or grease falls on composite decking, simply remove the fallen spill and wipe the area clean with a damp cloth.

Accidents happen, such as ketchup getting everywhere, or grease spilling out of the drip tray if it’s not tight enough. Composite decking’s easy-to-clean surface means you can get back to using your outdoor dining area in no time.

Safety Tools

It’s best to be safe when cooking with fire. Add a few cooking tools to better protect you and your family before lighting the coals. We can prepare the following tools beforehand:

Grill Mat

Lay a grill mat under your grill to protect your deck from hot embers and grease stains that won’t go away. The mat should be sturdy, heavy enough to withstand the wind, and extend a few inches beyond the edge of the grill.

Drip Pan

When cooking tougher cuts of meat or smoking at high temperatures for short periods, place a grease drip pan under the meat and on top of the coals. If grease drips, the drip pan catches it for easy cleanup. It also stops any dangerous burning.

Safety Gates

Grilling by the pool on the weekend is the best way to get people talking to each other. However, when kids and pets are around, it’s important to keep their hands and paws out of harm’s way—place safety gates around the grill. Place a set of rocking chairs and a case of cold beer inside the door to make it the perfect place for adults only.

High-quality Grill Brushes

A good grill brush is important because cheap brushes tend to shed and leave sharp steel shavings on the surface of the grill. Get a well-made stainless steel cleaning brush to make sure you’re eating meat and not metal. If you accidentally eat the shards, they could scratch your mouth or hurt your digestive system. After brushing the grates, wipe down all cooking areas to remove any loose fibers.

A common mistake people make is choosing the cheapest cooking tools or not using them at all. You should not try to save money here. To enjoy a picnic without flames, you should first add good cooking tools to your collection.

How to Keep Your Deck Furniture Safe

If you also want to barbecue on your deck, you need to clear the area around the cooking area. This way, guests and furniture won’t be harmed by stray flames. Outdoor furniture such as lounge chairs, umbrellas, and dishes should be kept at least 10 feet away from the grill.

After a busy day around the grill, the last thing you want is a plate of meatloaf falling to the ground because you bumped into an improperly placed planter. Make sure there is a clear path from the grill to the table so you can quickly and safely serve your guests the food cooked on the grill.

Choose the right table and chair packages to decorate your composite deck. It provides a lot of space for all the food and drinks (such as freshly squeezed lemonade, meatloaf, bread, etc.).

To make the decking the focal point of the party, you’ll need to add some seat pillows made of high-performance fabric.

Hot dogs or burgers? Fuel oil or charcoal? Composite decking or solid wood decking? When cooking on your deck, no matter how skilled you are at grilling, you should always make sure you take the right safety measures.
