Another good method is to cut the planks at a small angle if they are to be installed vertically. This will allow water to flow away from the ends. This will prevent water that is standing still from pooling and seeping into the planks. Leaving a gap of at least 8 mm at one end of the plank where it comes into contact with a corner or edge of the wall will also greatly reduce the likelihood of water running onto the end grain.
Other Considerations
When installing shiplap wall cladding on the external walls of a building, you need to pay more attention to issues such as insulation, gaps, and compression strips.
For good insulation and waterproofing, you may need to add a layer of insulation and a breathable membrane to the external wall before installing the external wall cladding. The best way to do this is to add a layer of insulation to the exterior wall studs. Make sure there is at least a 5mm gap between the two insulation boards.
