Today’s composite decking usually has a polymer shell that protects the core of the deck from weathering and rot. So you can’t paint every composite decking board. Some older composite decking materials don’t have covers, so you can easily paint or stain them. Before you start painting, you should inspect your composite wood decking. look at the product information or the cutout of the board to see if it has a polymer cap. Most caps have three or four sides, some cover the entire profile, and some cover only the top and sides.

Composite decking does not need to be painted or colored to remain strong and attractive. Painting is only for aesthetic purposes and does not improve the performance of the decking boards. How to Paint Uncapped Composite Decking

- Sander
- 240 grit sandpaper

Thorough Cleaning of the Deck
First, you will need to thoroughly clean the composite decking. Remove all upholstery and furniture and clean the surface. To remove leaves and other things stuck between the deck boards and the step boards, remember to clean between each board with a crevice cleaning tool.
Next, check the deck manufacturer’s instructions and follow the cleaning steps they give. Scrub the deck surface with a brush and cleaner appropriate for the deck material. Finally, rinse the deck with clean water and allow it to dry completely. Also, make sure to remove any mold and mildew.

Sanding the Boards
